Getting Around Dar es Salaam

First, understand the layout

Dar es Salaam stretches north along the coast from the harbour. The old commercial centre and Kariakoo sit near the port; the peninsula, Msasani, Oyster Bay and the northern beaches run up towards the city's edge. Traffic is the single biggest factor in any plan.

Your options

• Ride-hailing apps - the easiest choice for visitors. Fares are fixed in the app and you avoid haggling. Allow extra time at peak hours.
• Taxis - widely available, but agree the fare first or insist on the meter.
• Dala-dala minibuses - the cheapest way to travel and the most local, but routes are unmarked and vehicles are crowded. Best with a confident local.
• Bajaji (three-wheelers) - good for short hops where the back streets are narrow.
• Ferry to Zanzibar - fast boats leave the harbour for Stone Town several times a day; book a day ahead in high season.

Timing is everything

• 07:00-09:30 and 16:30-19:30 are the crush. Do not schedule an airport run in those windows.
• Saturday mornings around Kariakoo are the busiest of the week.

Keep small notes for bajaji and dala-dala fares. Drivers rarely have change for large notes.

Getting from the airport

Julius Nyerere International Airport sits about 12 km southwest of the centre. A ride-hailing car is the simplest option; agree the price before a street taxi. Allow 30 minutes off-peak and up to 90 minutes in the crush.
