What premium actually buys you

Premium in this guide means a flagship park and a high-end logistics package. It is not a different animal - it is more time in the best places, in better vehicles, with guides who have spent years reading those ecosystems.

Where the money goes

• Park and concession fees. Serengeti and Ngorongoro charge per person, per day, in US dollars, and the rate rises with the season.
• Lodges and camps. A mobile camp that follows the migration costs more than a fixed lodge, and both cost more than a public campsite.
• Vehicle and guide. A private 4x4 with a dedicated guide and tracker is the single biggest upgrade to the experience.
• Domestic flights. Flying between parks saves a full day of driving on each leg.

How to plan an itinerary

1. Decide the season first. The Serengeti is a different park in February and in August.
2. Pick two or three parks, not five. Criss-crossing the north burns time in the vehicle.
3. Allow at least three nights in the Serengeti and one full day in the Ngorongoro Crater.
4. Build in a buffer day. Weather and light-aircraft delays are normal.

Distances on the map are deceptive. A 200 km transfer between parks can take five hours on a dusty road, so the number of nights matters more than the number of parks.

Checklist before you pay a deposit

• Confirm that park and concession fees are itemised.
• Ask who your guide is and how long they have worked in that park.
• Check the vehicle: pop-up roof, fridge, charging points and a spare tyre.
• Get the cancellation and date-change policy in writing.
