A long, scenic approach from the west that crosses the Shira plateau and joins the Machame route at Barranco. The extra days and the gradual gain in altitude give the best acclimatisation of the standard routes, which is why it has one of the highest summit success rates. It starts with a game drive through forest, so you may see buffalo and monkeys on day one.

Packing list

- Four-season sleeping bag rated to -15C
- Insulated sleeping mat and pillow
- Layered system: base, fleece, synthetic and down jacket
- Waterproof shell jacket and over-trousers
- Thermal leggings and thick hiking socks
- Trekking boots, broken in, plus camp shoes
- Balaclava, warm hat and insulated gloves
- Sun hat, glacier glasses and high-SPF sunscreen
- Head torch with spare batteries
- Three to four litres of water capacity
- Water purification and electrolyte sachets
- Duffel bag, rain cover and personal first-aid kit
Permit notes
Lemosho fees are charged per day and include conservation, camping and rescue components. Because the route is longer it costs more than Marangu or Machame, even before crew tips. Permits are non-transferable and dates are checked at the gate.
