The steepest and shortest of the standard routes, climbing almost directly up the southern face to Barranco. It is beautiful, quiet and unforgiving: the fast gain in altitude makes it a poor choice for a first big climb. Recommended only for experienced trekkers who already know how their body handles altitude.

- Four-season sleeping bag rated to -15C
- Insulated sleeping mat
- Full layering system including down jacket
- Waterproof shell jacket and over-trousers
- Thermal base layers and thick socks
- Technical trekking boots with good ankle support
- Balaclava, warm hat and insulated gloves
- Sun hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen
- Head torch with spare batteries
- Three litres of water capacity
- Water purification tablets and electrolytes
- Trekking poles and a comprehensive first-aid kit
Permit notes
Daily park fees cover conservation, camping and rescue and must be booked ahead through a licensed operator. Steep sections make a rescue-fee line essential rather than optional. Passport and permit are checked at the gate and at camps.
